I headed back to my place and picked up Starla. I gave her a quick update.
âI canât believe that.â Starlaâs eyes widened as she took another sip of her coffee.
âI canât either. Itâs all so crazy.â
An idea began bobbing in my head, a good sign whenever I was fishing for answers. âDo you mind if we make one quick stop?â
Starla shrugged. âWhy not? I donât have anything else to do.â
I poked around on my phone for a minute until I found the information I needed. Then Starla and I were off, driving toward the Curriers. However, they werenât the ones I wanted to talk to.
Instead, I pulled up to a house four down from the Christmas display.
âWhere are we?â Starla asked, glancing around in confusion.
âIâm trying to find out some information. But Iâm going to need a cover story. Follow my lead.â
She shrugged. âWhatever you say.â
I straightened my evergreen-colored tunic, trying to make myself presentable as I walked to the door. I rang the bell and waited.
Finally, an older woman, probably in her seventies, answered. She stared at me a moment before her eyes lit with recognition. âYou two are those actresses who are here in town, arenât you?â
She opened the door wider, revealing an adorable red Christmas vest and a light up holiday necklace. She didnât exactly look like the Scrooge sheâd been described as.
âWe are. We were filming just down the street. We just wanted to take the time to meet some neighbors. Part of our reason for being here is to get to know the community better.â
âThen please, by all means, come in, come in.â She ushered us inside. âMy husband just ran to the store for some milk. I made some cookies. Would you like some?â
The heavenly aroma of snickerdoodles filled the air and made my stomach grumble, even though I wasnât hungry. Despite that realization, when she offered me some, I accepted, along with some hot chocolate.
My waistline was not going to agree with this. Maybe Iâd drink smoothies all day tomorrow to make up for it.
Once we were settled in the living room with our treats and had done a sufficient amount of chitchat, I turned back to Mrs. Puddington, ready to get down to business.
âThereâs been a lot of excitement in the neighborhood, huh?â I started.
âThere sure has. More than I like. But it is nice to see everyone coming together.â
Hmm . . . this wasnât exactly the story Dasher had told me.
âIâm sure the traffic can be frustrating,â I said, still fishing. Jackson had taught me that fishing required lots and lots of patience.
âIt can be. At first, my husband and I were frustrated. Then we realized we didnât want to be Scrooges, and we lightened up. Anything that makes the community come together isnât something we should complain about.â
âThatâs true . . .â There went that lead.
I did have one other thing I wanted to ask her about, though.
âDid you know the family who lived there before the Curriers moved in?â I continued, taking a sip of my hot chocolate.
